Call it a day later win for Latos.
The Reds were unable to come through in Mat Latos' return to the mound on Saturday, but answered that crushing loss with an offensive explosion on Sunday in a 13-4 win over Milwaukee.
It was the most lopsided win of the season for the Redlegs on a season-high 13 runs and 19 hits, as they take two of three from the division leading Brewers.
The Reds broke a 3-3 tie in the fifth when Todd Frazier stepped up with his 15th homerun of the season, a two-run shot. It was a big hit for Frazier, recently a new father, on Father's Day, who said everything is starting to come together for the fourth place Reds.
"To have a clutch win today was really nice," said Frazier. "We talk about finishing all the time and we definitely did that."
Billy Hamilton opened the scoring with a solo homer in the first, his fourth of the season. Brandon Phillips added a two-run bomb later in the inning to make it 3-0 Reds. The onslaught of scoring came in the eighth on a nonstop cycle of base hits with Cincinnati adding five runs to the board. They would tack on three more in the ninth for a 13-4 win.
"It was definitely big," said Reds manager Bryan Price. "We're establishing the fact that we play [the Brewers] very well and we've got several games left with them, so it should go all the way down to the wire." "I think knowing that we've got all the pieces together now, with Tony [Cingrani] in the bullpen and Mat Latos being a starter, our guys came through today," said Frazier.
Mike Leake (4-6) gave up four earned runs and nine hits in a five-inning winning effort. Tony Cingrani made his first relief appearance this season in the final two innings. Cingrani allowed zero runs, zero hits and one walk.
Devin Mesoraco snapped out of his 2-for-28 slump going 3-for-5 Sunday with one RBI.
The Reds are now 5-2 against the Brewers this season, and seven games out of first place in the national league central. Cincinnati heads to Pittsburgh for a three-game set with the Pirates beginning Tuesday.
