Before Sunday's game, a chance to earn a draw with Portugal sounded like a win for team USA, but the actual 2-2 result felt more like a kick in the gut.
USA earned one point in the draw and now has four points in Group G and is tied for first with Germany.
Nani opened the scoring five minutes into the game with a rocket past Tim Howard to make it 1-0 Portugal. After putting pressure on Portugal for the rest of the first half, USA equalized 19 minutes into the second half. Jermaine Jones buried a surprise bullet from outside the box to even things up at 1-1.
Seventeen minutes later in the 81st minute, a wild sequence led to the go-ahead goal by Clint Dempsey. Michael Bradley fired a shot at the top of the box, which ricocheted off a Portuguese player and eventually off the stomach of Dempsey to make it 2-1 USA.
The United States could smell victory and a chance to clinch a spot in the round of 16 until the 95th minute. In the final minute of stoppage time, Portugal had one last run and Cristiano Ronaldo sent in a perfect ball for teammate Varela who headed in the game-tying goal.
USA's final game in the group stage is against Germany on Thursday at noon. USA can reach the round of 16 for a second straight World Cup with a draw or win.
