Mesoraco slams Cubs in series opener

(FOX19) -

Fighting for All-Star respect, Devin Mesoraco and Todd Frazier led the Reds to a series opening win in Chicago.

Mesoraco hit a grand slam to cap the Reds five-run ninth inning leading the Reds to a 6-1 win.  It's Mesoraco's fourth straight game with a home run, one shy of a team record.

Todd Frazier banged out two more hits and drove in the Reds only run the first eight innings.

The win means the Reds have a winning record (38-37) for the first time this season.

"We want to put ourselves in a good position, so that when we come out of the break we can make a run at the division," said Mesoraco after the game. "If we play like we're
capable of, we should be right on their (Brewers) tails."

Alfredo Simon pitched seven innings and only allowed one earned run to lower his ERA to 2.92 on the season.

Billy Hamilton extended his hitting streak to 11 games.

The Reds have won six of their last seven games and continue the series with Chicago on Tuesday night.
