LAURENS, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A NFL player was stopped and charged with speeding in the Upstate, according to jail and sheriff's office officials.

According to Laurens County jail officials, Sidney Sam Montgomery, 24, was charged with speeding by the Highway Patrol.

Montgomery was stopped on Highway 72 three miles west of Clinton at 12:37 a.m. on Thursday going 89 mph in a 55 mph zone, according to Cpl. Bill Rhyne with the Highway Patrol.

Rhyne said the trooper used his discretion to arrest Montgomery, which is allowed under South Carolina laws for speeding.

The trooper, who was identified as L. Cpl. R.S. Salter, was suspended following the incident.

The South Carolina Department of Public Safety released the following statement on Monday:

The department holds its troopers to the highest standard of conduct and expects them to treat the public with courtesy and respect. Once this matter was brought to our attention, we began a review of the traffic stop and self-initiated an internal investigation. While Trooper Salter was within the law to make an arrest for the speeding violation in excess of 25 mph, Salter's behavior during the traffic stop of Mr. Montgomery was not representative of the professionalism displayed by our troopers and officers every day around the state.

Salter's wife, Amanda, thinks her husband is being treated unfairly. Back in 2009, he was reprimanded for not ticketing former Gov. Mark Sanford's driver. Since then, she said, he's been known to ticket high-ranking officials and even other law enforcement.

"He doesn't play the good ole boy system the way they see it, which is the philosophy of the Highway Patrol and the DPS. It's the good old boy system: 'you scratch my back, I'll scratch yours.' And (Salter's) always been known for being tough, for standing by the law, obeying the law, as it's written, equally," said Amanda Salter.

According to Montgomery's bio on the Houston Texans' website, the former Louisiana State University defensive end was drafted by the Texans in 2013 as the 95th overall pick and 33rd pick of the third round.

According to NFL.com, the Texans cut Montgomery due to alleged marijuana use, which he denied via statement through his agent. He then signed with the Oakland Raiders' practice squad in December, but was on the injured reserve list. He signed with the Bengals in April.

Montgomery is a 2009 graduate of Greenwood High School.
