MONTGOMERY, OH (FOX19) -
Authorities said a roaming black bear reported around the Clermont County area this week was spotted Thursday morning in the Montgomery area.
Dispatchers said the male bear was last seen just after 7:30 a.m. near the intersection of Pfeiffer Road and Peachtree Lane, an area between Montgomery Road and Interstate 71.
About an hour later, state wildlife officials were searching nearby in The Winds subdivision.
Montgomery resident MaryJo Byrnes had no idea "bearwatch" was in effect just outside her home, but she quickly knew something was up thanks to her furry friends. She said her two dogs had their noses to the ground when she let them outside Thursday.
"That tells me something was out of the ordinary. It wasn't a squirrel or a chipmunk this time," said Byrnes.
The animal was first spotted Tuesday at about 10:30 a.m. in the 1000 block of Hayward Circle, Miami Township, according to dispatch. Miami Township Police continued to track the bear until 4 p.m.
The bear, who apparently came from Kentucky, was also spotted Monday in nearby Batavia Township.
Miami Township police called off the search late Tuesday, but said a police presence would remain to stop the bear from going any further north.
The bear is not a threat to humans and will leave people alone as long as they don't bother it, according to state wildlife officer Gus Kiebel.
The bear, 2, weighs about 85 pounds.
Kathy Garza-Behr, an ODNR spokeswoman, said the bear is "out looking for a girlfriend" and he won't find it in Ohio. The state has a limited bear population and he'll have more luck in Kentucky, West Virginia or Pennsylvania to find a mate.
Black bears normally aren't aggressive and this one hasn't been either, but that can change if people start to chase or annoy the bear, according to Matt Roberts with ODNR. As this bear starts his new life looking for a mate, Roberts suggests everyone enjoy his presence from afar.
If the public sees the bear, it should give it space and not try to impede it. Residents should call the Ohio Department Natural of Resources District 5 office at 937-372-9261.
Montgomery residents are asked to call the Montgomery Police Department at 513-985-1600 to report the last known location of the bear. 911 should only be called in an emergency.
