(FOX19) -

Officials are searching for an escaped inmate from the Hamilton County Justice Center who reportedly faked his identity to get out.

Chris Bowden, 20, was awaiting a court appearance when he left the justice center Tuesday night. Bowden was sentenced to 10 years in the Ohio Department of Corrections for aggravated robbery.

The Hamilton County Sheriff's Office said Bowden reportedly used the identity of another inmate, 21-year-old Darius Dabney, being held on a drug trafficking charge.

Using Dabney's alias, authorities said Bowden was released and walked right out of the building.

Major Charmaine McGuffey, head of the Hamilton County Justice Department, said five different people reviewed Bowden's false paperwork before he was released.

The department is now conducting a "multi-layer" investigation into the matter. Authorities declined to reveal the standard procedure for releasing inmates, saying it could jeopardize security.

The sheriff's office issued escape warrants for Bowden's arrest and have been actively searching for him, officials said. He should be considered dangerous.

Dabney faces an additional complicity to escape charge and is being held on a $500,000 bond.

Anyone with information about Bowden's whereabouts is asked to contact Crime Stoppers at (513) 352-3040.

How did Bowden escape so easily? A recent audit suggested that the jail was "highly resistant to change" and needed technological upgrades. But could better technology have prevented this escape? Brett Hoffland has the story tonight on the FOX19 10 O'Clock News.
