(FOX19) -

Nearly a year after her estranged husband shot her five times before turning the gun on himself, Alisha Waters is working to make sure no other woman has to go through what she has endured.

It happened just after 8 a.m. August 6 at a medical office building in Fort Thomas. DJ Mathis followed his soon to be ex-wife to work and pulled out a gun as she was getting into the elevator.

Alisha was shot once in the neck, once in the leg and three times in the abdomen. Miraculously, she survived.

Authorities said Mathis died from a single gunshot wound to the head.

Alisha spoke with Jacki Jing and reflected on the tragic day, adjusting to her new life as a guadiplegic and the legislation she's working to push.

You can see the entire interview Wednesday night at 10.

Alisha and her family are also holding a fundraiser to help with mounting medical bills from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at Ludlow VFW, 830 Elm Street in Ludlow.
