Padres blank Reds in 3-game sweep

(FOX19) -

By Brett Bibbins

The San Diego Padres (38-47) have now swept the series against the Cincinnati Reds (43-41), as the Padres shut out the Redlegs, 3-0, Wednesday afternoon.  The Reds now move to 1-5 against the Padres on the season.

"I think its a frustrated group and team in general," Reds' manager Bryan Price said.  "I think we had a chance to gain some ground on Milwaukee and St. Louis, but we didn't take advantage of it."

San Diego's starting pitcher Tyson Ross (7-8) pitched his first career complete game and first career complete game shutout, only giving up three hits, striking out nine and not walking a batter.

The only three runs of the game came on a first inning two-out three-RBI single by catcher Rene Rivera which landed just short of the glove of a diving Billy Hamilton in short center-field.  Rivera's single was the first single to produce three runs in the MLB this season.

Reds' starter Johnny Cueto (8-6) managed to keep the Padres off the board after the first, putting in a quality start of seven innings, giving up three runs on seven hits, striking out eight and allowing three base on balls.  Cueto's ERA rises to 1.99 with today's start, which is still good for the best ERA of any starting pitcher in the MLB.

The Cincinnati offense struggled all day, as they only managed three hits, two of which coming on singles from Todd Frazier and the third coming from a double from Brayan Pena.  Pena later advanced to third on a groundout by Zack Cozart, but was stranded as pinch hitter Joey Votto flew out to right-field to end the inning.  Pena was the only Red to advance past first base in today's game.

"We didn't score any runs, there were just a lot of things that were missed opportunities today," Price said.
