HAMILTON COUNTY, OH (FOX19) -
An escaped inmate is still on the loose at this hour, but questions remain on how he left the Hamilton County Justice Center so easily.
Authorities say 20-year-old Chris Bowden got out of jail by switching identities with Darius Dabney.
Officials say Bowden was accidentally released Tuesday night even though five jail employees had to sign off before an inmate can be released.
"We've never had that happen here. I don't know how other places do it," said AJ Rodenberg, Clermont County Sheriff.
Clermont County sheriff AJ Rodenberg says they have similar protocol as Hamilton County and many other local jails. He says they use an ID card system that holds detailed info of every inmate.
"When something like this happens obviously it does get our attention because no one's perfect and we've made mistakes here before with things and it could happen here," said Rodenberg.
A recent audit on the sheriff's office outlines some recommendations they should make, from employee training to technology, particularly with the jail.
An audit from March identifies problems with training in the past. It reads, "deputies assigned to the jail...have received little, if any, training to update their knowledge consistent with best practices and recent court decisions".
It also states "this lack of training was a consistent theme through the rank and file of officers assigned to the HCJC"
Technology is another area of concern. The audit says "as inmates are processed, explicit details about their physical characteristics, phone numbers, addresses, and a host of other information are recorded in current filing systems. however, little if any technology exists within the agency that would permit officers to mine this data in a quick and efficient manner".
"We are looking at every procedure that we use. It would not be pertinent at this time each and every one of those procedures that we use because I think it would certainly jeopardize security for the people that we are holding in here," said Charmaine McGuffey.
Major Charmaine McGuffey says an investigation will determine whether procedural changes are needed and if anyone involved in the mistaken release will be disciplined.
"We have procedures in place that help us to identify each and every inmate, and again I'm going to note to you that we release hundreds of people from the jail, this is a very rare occurrence," said McGuffey.
Officials didn't say if the escape is related to any of the issues presented in the audit.
FOX19 has reached out to the sheriff's office for comment on any changes in response to the audit and has yet to receive a response.
Dabney is now facing an additional charge for complicity to escape and held on $500,000 bond.
Anyone with information on Chris Bowden's whereabouts is urged to contact the Hamilton County Sheriff's Department or Crime Stoppers at 352-3040.
