POLICE: In 60 percent of District 5 auto thefts, keys left in car

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) - Cincinnati's District Five has had an increase in auto thefts this year compared to 2013.

Police say that in 60 percent of these offenses, the owner or operator left the keys in the car, making it easy to steal.

According to officials, it is against the law for drivers to leave a car unattended on a street without first stopping the engine, locking the ignition and removing the key.

Police say the best way to prevent auto thefts is to lock your car even if you only plan on stepping away for a few seconds.
