Bruce HR breaks slump, lifts Reds to third season series over Brewers

(FOX19) -

Jay Bruce broke out of an 0-for-26 slump Sunday with a go-ahead homerun Sunday as the Reds took two of three from the Brewers in a 4-2 win.

Bruce's big hit came in the bottom of the eighth with the scored tied 2-2. The two-run blast to right gave the Reds their third straight series over Milwaukee this season.

"No one likes to go for 0-for-26," said Bruce. "Honestly, I didn't even know that was the case until last night or this morning. It was a great time to come out of the [slump] and help secure a win."

"It was an immediate turn of the tide, and certainly a big win for us," said Reds manager Bryan Price. "We're really putting on display that we can compete with a team that's in first place in the division and compete well. There's no nobody here that doubts our club in this clubhouse. We've been playing a lot better lately, and if it continues, we'll put some pressure on these clubs ahead of us."

Mat Latos (2-1) was strong once again for the Redlegs giving up just one earned run in eight innings. He allowed four hits and struck out three in his second win of the season.

"The only run that scored was a guy that I walked. So, that one is on me," said Latos. "They say with surgery, it takes about a year to feel right. I'm starting to feel better with my mechanics and staying on top of the ball. I'm missing a couple pitches here and there, I'm not striking out a lot of guys, but because of the defense I'm able to go deeper into the game."

With the win, the Reds are six games back of the division-leading Brewers in the NL Central. Cincinnati has won seven of their ten games against Milwaukee this year.

Side note: Aroldis Chapman wasn't available to pitch after tweaking his hamstring while warming up in the outfield. Bryan Price said it didn't seem serious and the team hopes to have him back on Monday against the Cubs.
