Man arrested after firing gun while officers were present in OTR
OVER THE RHINE, OH (FOX19) -
A man was arrested in connection with a shooting Tuesday night that happened while police were investigating an Over-The-Rhine apartment unit.
Jerome Young, 32, was arrested after he accidentally fired a gun while running from police.
Original reports said the officer was shot at, but new information reveals the shot was not directed at the officer.
"They saw a gun, they heard a gun shot. Just as a precautionary measure it was broadcast as shots fired at officers. We'd rather officers err on the side of caution," said a Cincinnati Police officer on the scene.
According to the arrest report, police were investigating a trespassing offense on E. 13th Street when Young fled from police on foot. He slipped and fired one shot into the ground and then threw the gun out a third floor window.
Other tenants were inside the building and the complex was placed on lock down, according to police.
The landlord reportedly requested police investigate a unit in the building, which is why officers were there in the first place. Authorities have not said what initially led to that request.
Young was charged with obstructing official business, having weapons while under disability, carrying concealed weapons and tampering with evidence.
