(FOX19) - Millions of dollars worth of heroin and cocaine have been seized along with 14 people arrested as part of a lengthy investigation into a drug operation that spans from the Tri-State to California.
Approximately 35 pounds of heroin, 18 pounds of cocaine, and $600,000 in assets were seized in the year long probe, according to police. The large-scale operation reportedly had networks in California, Texas, Nevada and Illinois as well as multiple Ohio cities.
Two individuals, a current and former inmate of the London Correctional Facility, were the masterminds behind the drug operation, according to Hamilton County Sheriff Jim Neil. While incarcerated, the inmates would allegedly arrange drug shipments to southern Ohio drug traffickers.
Authorities say the inmates at the correctional facility, located about 90 miles North East of Cincinnati, are believed to have ties to the notorious Mexican La Familia drug cartel.
The investigation came to head in January when agents seized 8.8 pounds of heroin and arrested two suspects in Indiana. Authorities say the seized heroin was destined for distribution in Cincinnati and Springfield, Ohio.
Subsequent arrests led authorities to the collection of evidence against the incarcerated inmate and two subjects who are not yet in custody.
The Dearborn County Sheriff's Office also assisted in the investigation.
