Two years later, police still investigating mysterious murder of Barbara Howe

(FOX19) -

It was nearly two years ago when Barbara Howe, 86, was found dead stuffed in the trunk of her own car.

Last September, police in Monroe announced they had a person of interest in the case.

Howe's family is still looking for answers, as no arrests have been made.

On Monday, Monroe Police Department detectives told FOX19 the person of interest they established months ago, is still the same person of interest they have today.

"She was a very loving, caring person," said Howe's daughter, Donna Wesselman.

Howe's daughter tells FOX19 she's confident the police have the answers that will give them the closure they so desperately want.

"For what purpose did this person pick her, and why did she have to die?  I just don't get it," Wesselman said.

Howe was found murdered in the trunk of her red Cadillac in Middletown in late 2012.

Since then, there have been no arrests or named suspects, only a person of interest.

"We still have a person of interest.  It's the same person of interest.  We're simply working through things with various other agencies," said Detective Gregg Myers of the Monroe Police Department.

Myers say they are having other agencies look over their case.  But, since that person of interest was named, there haven't been any groundbreaking developments between police and the prosecutor's office.

"We're not at the level they'd like us to be.  We just have to keep working and see where there can be some compromise to where we all agree that we can move forward with this," said Myers.

Howe's family members hope that day comes soon.

"She was the one that pulled us all together, and without her, we've sort of fallen apart," Wesselman told FOX19.

Det. Myers works every day on the case, one he thinks about from sun up to sundown.  He too hopes that day comes soon.

"Would I like it to be done tomorrow?  Absolutely.  For me?  Not for me.  For the family," said Myers.

FOX19 spoke with Butler County Prosecutor Mike Gmoser who said, as with any case, he wants to make sure there's enough to get through a grand jury indictment and ultimately end up with a conviction.  He says he respects the family's feelings at this time, and believes police in Monroe are doing their best to solve the case.  He did not want to further comment because it is a pending investigation.

Police are still looking for any leads or tips you may have.  Call the department at 513-539-9234 or their tipline at 513-360-2211.  There is a $10,000 reward being offered in the case.
