(CNN) – A suspected Nazi war criminal died in Philadelphia just hours before a U.S. court ruled he was to be extradited to Germany to face trial.

The U.S. Marshals Service says 89-year-old Johann Breyer died of unknown causes at a hospital overnight on Tuesday.

The suspected Nazi death camp guard faced charges of contributing to the murder of European Jews during the peak of the Nazi reign of terror in 1944.

Breyer had lived in the United States since the 1950s.

He was arrested in Philadelphia last month and was awaiting the extradition hearing when his health deteriorated and he was transferred to the hospital on Saturday.
