Couple arrested after police finds family living in overdue U-Ha - Cincinnati News, FOX19-WXIX TV

A Mississippi couple is behind bars after McComb Police found them living with their two children and the children's grandmother in a rented U-Haul truck.

The truck had been reported stolen out of New Jersey.

Detective Sgt. Shannon Sullivan from the McComb Police Department says 28-year-old Darnell Varnado and 29-year-old Shantay Varnado are in the Pike County jail charged with possessing stolen property.

Both were arrested Monday when a patrol officer spotted what looked like a family living in the back of a U-Haul parked in a residential driveway.

When the officer ran the vehicle information the U-Haul came back stolen.

Police say the Varnado's rented the U-Haul truck from New Jersey May 27th. It was supposed to be returned May 29th in Washington D.C.

After the arrest of their parents, the children, who are under the age of 18, were placed in a temporary residence along with their grandmother.

The Varnado's were given a $10,000 bond, however Darnell is being held because he has a prior misdemeanor charge that has not been paid.

This is not the first time the Varnado's have had a run in with McComb Police.

Police tried to help the family back in June when they were found living in the U-Haul truck in the parking lot of a McComb business on Delaware Avenue.

The U-Haul at that time was not considered stolen.

Police along with the Mississippi Department of Human services tried to assist the Varnado's and a second family that was living with them in the back of the U-Haul.

The families received assistance through DHS and a local church where they were able to stay in a local motel in the Monticello area.

Officials say the kids are in good health.

As for the U-Haul truck, it has been returned.
