SALISBURY, NC (WBTV) -

Always up for a challenge, from skydiving to plunging into freezing water, WBTV meteorologist Ashley Batey got a chance to truly feel the heat Saturday in East Spencer.

Firefighters from across the county took part in a "live burn" where a house is actually set on fire to give firefighters valuable training.

Saturday a home on S. Long St. went up in flames and thick smoke while firefighters trained on how to control just such a fire.

Batey was also on the scene, and not just as an interested observer.

"They were gracious enough to let me put on their gear (which was about 50 lbs) and even let me go inside to watch them put out the fire," Batey said.

Batey spent several hours at the scene of the exercise and she said that it gave her a new appreciation for the tough job firefighters face.

"This will stick with me forever. David Watson, who took me around, said once I was loaded down, 'now just imagine 9/11. Imagine going up 100 flights of stairs carrying this. And those were the ones who came back,'" Batey said.  "It was difficult lugging that stuff up one flight."
