AVONDALE, OH (FOX19) -

The massive sinkhole that opened more than a month ago will take longer to repair than initially expected, the city says.

A Metro bus drove over buckled pavement June 19 on Shields Street, causing the sinkhole to open up. Crews have been working since to repair the 15 feet deep and 15 feet wide hole created by the collapsed sewage pipe.

The Metropolitan Sewer District of Greater Cincinnati (MSDGC) originally indicated the sinkhole would be repaired in one month and the roadway reopened.

Officials announced on Monday the estimated completion date is now extended through the end of August, citing the extensive nature of the process, the depth of the collapsed pipe and need for safety precautions.

Crews have reportedly had to do much of the work to the 100-year-old sewer line by hand.

A temporary closure of Shields Street east of Vine will take place this week and officials say detours will be posted. The West End of Shields Street will remain closed until the project is fully complete.
