Reds pound Tribe behind Cozart's bat and glove

(FOX19) -

The Reds (58-56) took one step closer to winning the Ohio Cup Wednesday with an 8-3 win over the Indians. Zack Cozart drove in four runs and the Reds compiled ten hits as a team in their second straight win over Cleveland.

"It was another one of those games where we got an early shot by Cozart and with a kid like [Mat] Latos pitching, it's a difference maker," said Reds manager Bryan Price. "[Latos] was able to pound the strike zone. Then, Cozart made two great defensive plays to back him up. Those are big plays."

Cozart made two web gem plays to keep the Indians at bay and uncorked his first home run since the first day of June to give the Redlegs an early 3-0 lead. Cozart finished the game 2-for-3 with two runs scored and four RBI.

"I don't know what it is. I feel like I'm attacking the ball. I can't worry about what's happening," said Cozart. "I've just got to go out there and keep swinging. You know, to have a triple yesterday and home run today feels pretty good."

Kris Negron had a breakout game with a two-run homer to add to the lead in the fourth inning. Negron finished a triple away from the cycle, ending up 3-for-4 with three runs scored.

"It gets contagious. Once we start getting into a rhythm we just fall in line," said Negron. "Any time you get the bats going and help out our [pitching] staff, it's a great night."

Mat Latos pitched seven innings of shutout baseball before he gave up three runs in the eighth. Latos was yanked after seven and two-thirds innings of work, allowing six hits, three earned runs and striking out five in his fourth win of the year.

The Reds have compiled 25 hits and 17 runs in their last two wins over the Tribe. They can win the Ohio Cup outright with a win on Thursday.
