TIPS: Back-to-school safety for drivers, bus riders

(FOX19) - For the last couple of months, your commute to work has been void of school buses and kids waiting at the bus stop.

As many schools in our area head back, there are some reminders for motorists and students that will help keep everyone safe.

For drivers:

  • It is illegal in all 50 states to pass a bus that is stopped.
  • Must stop in both directions on any undivided roadway.
  • The area 10 feet around a school bus is where children are in the most danger of being hit.
  • Never pass a school bus on the right.
  • Children are the most unpredictable pediatrics. Motorists must be alert.

For families and students:

  • Try to be early.
  • Wait for the bus at least five giant steps away from the curb.
  • Never cross the street behind the bus.
  • When crossing in front, walk 10 steps in front of the bus so the driver can see you.
