1 death, 7 shootings reported in Clarksville

CLARKSVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

It was a deadly few hours in Clarksville, with seven shootings and one death in the span of a day.

Clarksville police are stepping up patrols, while leaders at a church next to a crime scene want to act as the community's beacon of hope.

"The reason why we are here is because things like that do happen," said Pastor Gary Ellis of Abundant Life Outreach Center. "You don't take a candle into a lit room and expect to be effective."

Ellis said the outreach center's basketball hoops, bleachers, sanctuary and more are an invitation.

"We're not here because it's a popular neighborhood for the affluent," Ellis said. "We're here because it's a difficult neighborhood, populated by people who need hope."

The Abundant Life Outreach Center has stood on Chapel Street for more than 30 years. Ellis believes his presence has rarely been more important than in the wake of a shooting death just feet away.

"This just comes as a shock to a lot of people," Ellis said. "It's always devastating when something like this happens in the community."

Thursday night, Clarksville police arrived on the scene to find 24-year-old Fran Daniel Caratini shot to death.

"My grief is for the families," Ellis said. "There's a mother now with children who now have no father. There's a mother now whose son has been deceased through violence."

The death comes after a violent week in Clarksville that also saw four people shot on Treeland Drive, and in another incident, two people shot on Caldwell Lane.

No arrests have been made, and police are unsure if any of the cases are connected. All the shootings took place within seven miles in the span of a day.

"We've got a neighborhood of resilient people," Ellis said.

Clarksville police have set up a unit to record Chapel Street while extra patrols will be taken on areas of interest.

Ellis said his message at the pulpit Sunday will reflect the community's reaction to the shootings.

"There's pain, there's sorrow, there's suffering, but the dream will always outlive the difficulties," he said.

Ellis added he wanted the people struggling with the violence to know his doors are open.

Anyone with information about any of the shootings is asked to call Clarksville police.
