ESPN to offer national wireless phone service through Sprint

Sports cable channel ESPN is launching its own wireless phone service starting next year.

It's the first of several branded cell phone services planned by The Walt Disney Company, the majority owner of ESPN. The service will be called ESPN Mobile and will partner up with Sprint's nationwide service. The venture will sell ESPN-branded phone accessories and access to sports information over Sprint's high-speed data network.

ESPN's president says the move "enhances our mandate to serve fans anytime, anywhere."
