CINCINNATI (FOX19) - One week after ESPN reported a four-year deal worth $20 million for Vontaze Burfict, the Bengals finally put pen to paper on Wednesday by signing their star inside linebacker through the 2017 season.
Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis has watched Burfict progress from an undrafted player out of Arizona State to one of the best linebackers in the NFL.
"The very first practice we had with him, I knew he was pretty special," said Lewis. "He's done nothing but get better since that day."
"He gets us going," said Bengals linebacker Vincent Rey about Burfict. "He's a tough individual who really understands the game."
Burfict was named a Pro Bowler during the 2013 season and topped the league with 171 tackles.
He's battled sickness and hamstring issues during the preseason, but said on Tuesday that he plans to be ready by week one of the regular season in Baltimore.
