(CNN) - The World Health Organization says the deadly Ebola outbreak continues to accelerate in West Africa and has now killed more than 1,500 so far.

The total number of cases stands at just over 3,000, with 40 percent occurring in the past three weeks.

The outbreak, the deadliest ever, has been centered in Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia, with a handful of cases in Nigeria.

According to the WHO, the overall fatality rate is 52 percent, ranging from 42 percent in Sierra Leone to 66 percent in Guinea.

A separate Ebola outbreak, unrelated to the outbreak in West Africa, was reported on Sunday by the Democratic Republic of Congo.
