CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) -

The Cincinnati Bengals have released running back BenJarvus Green-Ellis.

Green-Ellis played two seasons with the Bengals and led the team in rushing yards both seasons. However, the emergence of second-year running back Giovani Bernard and the drafting of second-rounder Jeremy Hill has made Green-Ellis expendable.

"It's very difficult to release such a fine player and person as BenJarvus," said head coach Marvin Lewis. "He has been an exceptional player and teammate, as well as mentor to our younger players. We thank Bennie for all he has done and wish him the best of luck in the future."

Green-Ellis was due to make more than $2 million this season.

The Bengals have to trim the roster to the opening day 53 by this weekend.
