Orders coming to Ohio school district for cookie

Posted: Updated:

ELYRIA, Ohio (AP) - A northeast Ohio school district that discontinued a popular cafeteria cookie under new federal nutritional guidelines says it's heard from plenty of people commenting on the decision or wanting to special-order the treat.

The traditional Elyria (eh-LEER'-ee-uh) pink cookie is a sweet sour cream sugar cookie with pink icing. It was a favorite of students for four decades, but Elyria school cafeterias stopped selling it because of the government's edict to provide healthier foods and cut fats and cholesterol.

A district spokeswoman tells The Chronicle-Telegram (http://bit.ly/1wJTf8v) the schools have received more than 100 calls and messages, some from outside Ohio. She says some want to place special orders, and others suggest creating a healthier version or ignoring the guidelines.

The district's food provider decided against offering a modified, healthier version.
