Local chef helps out with family cooking contest

(FOX19) -

Renowned local chef Jean-Robert de Cavel is an integral part of Cincinnati's fine dining scene, but on Thursday he spent the day cooking instant rice.

The chef led cooking classes at Beechmont Avenue Kroger all in the name of fostering a better relationship between families and the food on their tables. The classes were part of the third annual Ben's Beginners Cooking Contest, sponsored by Uncle Ben's rice.

"The whole purpose is to get families cooking together because that leads to healthier choices for the child and also for the family," said Matt Hurst with Uncle Ben's brand. Contest winners could receive $15,000 in cash and a $30,000 cafeteria makeover for the child's school.

How to win: Families choose a an Uncle Ben's recipe, (listed on web site here) shoot a video of the family cooking together and then upload the video for a chance to win.

Last year, Cincinnati's own St. Vincent Ferrer school was awarded a $30,000 school cafeteria makeover from the Ben's Beginners contest.
