BUTLER COUNTY, OH (FOX19) -

As workers with Butler County Children Services continue to strike, a mediator has been brought in to propose a settlement between the social workers union and the county.

A federal mediator was present at the five hour negotiation meeting on Friday, according to a union representative. The mediator reportedly proposed that union members return to work while negotiations with the county carry on.

The strike has left close to 200 children without regularly scheduled social workers. Outside agents have been brought in to assist with those children.

The union is expected to respond to the mediator's proposal to return to work by Monday.

Workers began striking on Aug. 18, and although both parties continue to negotiate, they have not reached an agreement based on money and work load.

The county wants to move from what they call "unsustainable" step increases to a performance-based pay system, which has already been accepted by 10 out of 11 county unions.

Union workers in Butler County are upset they haven't received a raise in three years and say the workload is increasing. Dozens of workers are participating in the strike.
