ADAMS COUNTY, OH (FOX19) - One person has died and another is in custody following a Franklin Township crash that shut down State Route 32.

The fatal crash happened around 2 p.m. Friday at the intersection of State Route 73.

According to police, Kevin Thomas, 27, was traveling north when he failed to stop at a stop sign. His Hino box truck hit an SUV driven by 79-year-old Betty Newell.

Newell's car ended up in the westbound lanes of Route 32 and Thomas' truck came to rest several hundred feet north of the road.

Newell's passenger, 81-year-old Harold Newell, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Betty Newell and Thomas were transported to the Adams County Regional Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

Authorities say everyone was wearing seatbelts and police do not believe drugs or alcohol were involved. Thomas is being charged with aggravated vehicular homicide for the crash.

State Route 32 was closed for about three hours for investigation and clean up.

According to the Ohio State Patrol, failure to yield violations caused the second-highest number of fatal crashes last year.
