Mike Nugent missed a game winning 36-yard field goal attempt in overtime to tie Carolina, 37-37.
"I'm just really upset. I've been hitting the ball just incredibly the last four games. My warm ups have been great, hitting the ball very well, but that doesn't matter. You have to hit it when it counts," Nugent said after the game.
Nugent was 3-for-3 before missing the final field goal attempt. He is 8-of-13 this season in field goal attempts.
"That's pathetic. I don't know how long the field goal was, but if it's a 20 yarder or a 30 or 40-50 yarder, you've got to hit it. Only bad ball I hit on the day…just pathetic. Pathetic hit," Nugent said.
Andy Dalton threw for 323 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions.
Carolina's Cam Newton finished with 284 passing yards, two touchdowns, and an interception. Newton led the Panthers in rushing yards with 107.
With no A.J. Green or Marvin Jones, Mohamed Sanu stepped into the leadership role for the wide receiving group. Sanu finished the game with 11 receptions for 120 yards and a touchdown.
Giovani Bernard's 89-yard touchdown in the second quarter was the second longest run in Bengals history. Despite injuring his right shoulder in the game, he finished with 157 total yards and a touchdown.
The reigning NFL defensive MVP and St. Xavier High School alum, Luke Kuechly led the Panthers with 11 tackles in his return back to the Queen City.
The Bengals play in Indianapolis at Lucas Oil Stadium next Sunday.
