Darrell Beavers ran the Cincinnati police explorer program and was supposed to mentor youth interested in careers in law enforcement.

Instead, he was sentenced to 12 months in prison Thursday for receiving nude photos from a 17-year-old girl in the program.

Beavers, 45, was convicted of illegal use of a minor in sexually oriented material and attempted tampering with evidence between June and September 2013.

The case unraveled in September 2013 when the 17-year-old's father became concerned about his daughter's contact with Beavers and complained to police officials.

An internal investigation was launched. Detectives discovered Beavers had set up a fake substation in the 2600 block of Bushnell Street in East Price Hill.

They searched the apartment in late September and found a bed, bedding, food, personal lubricant, videos and a night vision camera belonging to Cincinnati police.

Beavers destroyed a cell phone after he became aware of their investigation, authorities have said.
