The worst: NB I-71/Pfeiffer Rd interchange

MONTGOMERY, OH (FOX19) - The Pfeiffer Road interchange onto northbound Interstate 71 tops a new list of the worst areas for motorists.

More than 200 of the 600 accidents reported there end in injury or death, according to the Ohio Department of Transportation and

Currently, almost 140,000 vehicles pass the interchange daily, and the accident rate is twice the state average.

FOX 19 NOW discovered that each year when these numbers are released, ODOT identifies about 300 urban and rural intersections, non-freeway segments and freeway segments to study around the state.

Those studies help the department develop short-term fixes, such as new signs; medium-term fixes, such as fixing ditches; and long-term fixes, such as comprehensive redesigns.

In this case, ODOT began work on improvements to the Pfeiffer Road/Interstate 71 interchange in January 2013.

They include creating a northbound I-71 lane from Pfeiffer to Interstate 275. Currently, vehicles entering northbound I-71 from Pfeiffer must merge with I-71 traffic before reaching the exit lanes for I-275. This causes backups starting as early as 2 p.m. most weekdays.

The project will also improve access onto I- 71 from eastbound Pfeiffer Road through dual, dedicated left-turn lanes, state officials said.
