COVINGTON, KY (FOX19) -

It was a chilly Sunday morning at The Word of Life Christian Fellowship church in Covington.

Bishop Darin Miller says the church discovered the 30-year-old boiler that heated the sanctuary was broken at the end of October. According to their estimates, it will cost anywhere from $5,000 to $16,000 to fix it.

It's money Bishop Miller says the church doesn't have. To get by, they've bought a few space heaters to heat up the church. Sunday Bishop Miller says the congregation continued to worship despite the 40 degree temperatures.

"We tried to contact as many people as we could through the week. Told them to put the word out through the week. Told them to dress in layers today so they came. There was a few that didn't even care. They are like football fans but most people did dress in layers,” said Bishop Miller.

The church is planning fundraisers to pay for a new boiler including a Sing-A-Thon on Dec. 5 with the goal of raising $5,000. They've also set up a Go Fund Me page for additional support.

Bishop Miller says after bringing the need to the congregation, they've raised a little over $1,000 so far. They hope to have the boiler replaced before temperatures drop below freezing for an extended period of time. He worries the church's 100 year-old infrastructure could be in danger of falling apart without the new boiler.

If you would like to make a donation to the church, Bishop Miller says they will gladly accept them mailed or in person at the church 2002 Greenup Street, Covington KY.
