FAIRFIELD, OH (FOX19) - Fire destroyed a Fairfield restaurant early Tuesday and caused $400,000 in damage.
Fairfield firefighters responded to Sabor Peruano Peruvian Restaurant, 7105 Dixie Highway, just after midnight.
A city worker driving a salt truck on Dixie Highway called authorities after spotting flames shooting from the back of the restaurant and kitchen area, said Fairfield Fire Chief Don Bennett.
When crews arrived, they found the building totally engulfed by heavy fire and black smoke.
The fire was so massive, additional fire crews were called in from neighboring communities. Firefighters were forced to fight the blaze from outside the building because it was too dangerous to go inside, Bennett said.
The bulk of the fire was knocked down by 3 a.m.
The cause remains under investigation, but the fire appears to have started in the kitchen area, according to Bennett.
Firefighters slipped on ice that formed on the ground due to overnight frigid temperatures, and salt had to be spread around the fire scene.
