The Xavier Musketeers stayed unbeaten Monday night defeating the Murray State Racers 89-62. The Musketeers jumped on the Racers early. Just two and a half minutes into the game XU was winning 9-0, forcing Murray State into an early timeout. The run continued until the lead was stretched to 15-2.
Reigning Big East Rookie of the Week Trevon Bluiett poured in five three pointers, including back-to-back treys as the Racers had cut the deficit to under ten points midway through the first half. XU took a 52-32 lead into the break.
Even as a freshman Bluiett knows his coach has confidence to make a big shot. "I don't think he relies on me to score, so that kind of takes that pressure off, so to be able to have that kind of green light and allow players to play is definitely a good look for the team as a whole," Bluiett said after the game
It was a special night inside the Cintas Center as academic advisor Sister Rose Ann Fleming had her jersey retired during a halftime ceremony. Many former Xavier players were in attendance to celebrate the night.
The second half did not go by without fireworks. Murray State's Terron Gilmore fouled Xavier freshman J.P. Macura hard hitting the floor. Gilmore was given with a flagrant two foul and was ejected. After the play, Xavier forward Jalen Reynolds ran onto the court from the bench. He was also ejected. Coach Chris Mack says that Reynolds will not be suspended for the next game.
Freshman guard Edmond Sumner played his first minutes of the season in the second half after suffering from knee tendonitis the first three games of the year. He played nine minutes with three assists in his Musketeer debut.
There was speculation that Sumner may be redshirted, but Chris Mack believes he can help his team this year. "You can see the wiggle he has in his game," Mack explains Sumner's game. "He's a real good defender. There was some plays he would finish once he is used to being on the floor."
XU was led by Matt Stainbrook's 19 points and eight rebounds. Before being ejected Jalen Reynolds posted a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Bluiett also had 19 points.
Up next for Xavier (4-0) is a Thanksgiving match up against San Diego in the Wooden Legacy.
