BOONE CO., KY (FOX19) - Boone County Sheriff Michael A. Helmig has temporarily stepped down from his position on Wednesday.
Helmig informed Judge Gary W. Moore Wednesday of his intention to step down for the remainder of his current term effective Nov. 30. Helmig intends to return to his post to be sworn in as Boone County Sheriff in January. He was elected to the position in the November general election.
Moore has appointed Colonel Les Hill as sheriff to serve the remainder of Helmig's term. Hill has 25 years of experience inside the Boone County Sheriff's office.
The department has not commented on why Helmig is stepping down.
