FLORENCE, KY (FOX19) -
Live racing returns to Turfway Park in Florence Thursday.
Turfway is just one part of a $4 billion dollar industry in the state of Kentucky.
So why winter racing? Kentucky's tracks open and close in turn. This makes sure that live racing is available in the state all year long.
The Kentucky Horse Racing Commission sets racing dates for Kentucky's tracks. Since last year, Turfway holds two meets, the Holiday meet in December and the Winter/Spring meet from January until late March.
Turfway Park employs about 100 people year round. That number jumps to around 300 during the track's live race meetings. Not included is the ever changing number of jockeys, grooms, trainers, and exercise riders.
Thursday's race is the first of the December season. There will be nine races every Thursday through Sunday in December.
