CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) -

A local member of the Original Tuskegee airmen was laid to rest Friday.

Nicholas Neblett passed away at the age of 93.

The Tuskegee airmen were the first black servicemen to serve as military pilots in the United States Army. The 996 pilots were an elite group that served during World War II.

These airmen paved the way for the racial integration of the U.S. armed forces.

Neblett's visitation was held Friday night at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church. He will be buried at Spring Grove Cemetery.

He leaves behind seven children, 21 grandchildren and more than 30 great-grandchildren.
