US Helicopters Deliver Tsunami Aid

US helicopters drop food, rescue survivors

American helicopters are dropping off food, and picking up survivors who are in pretty bad shape.

Choppers flying along the Indonesian coast have been handling both of those tasks today, as US military relief operations expand. About 50 survivors were taken from the coast of Indonesia's Sumatra Island. They included children and the elderly -- and after eight days with little food or water, some weren't able to speak or move.Doctors say some have pneumonia, bone fractures and infected wounds.

The helicopters took them to a field station at an air base where medical teams treated them and sent them on to nearby hospitals.

An Australian commander says, "We're just making sure they don't die." As for the relief supplies, they included cartons of food aid donated by schools in Singapore.
