Deters Fires Collins

Incoming prosecutor fires assistant who sued his predecessor

Hamilton County's new prosecutor has fired the assistant prosecutor who accused his predecessor of sexual harassment.

Former state Treasurer Joseph Deters says that attorney Rebecca Collins would be a distraction for the office. He says he sent her a letter firing her two weeks ago. Deters won election to the post in November and takes office today.

Former Prosecutor Mike Allen dropped his re-election bid amid the accusations and the legal wrangling that followed. Collins' attorney Randy Freking says it's illegal to fire a person for making a sexual harassment complaint. He says the action increases the value of her claim because her job loss is due to the situation.

The lawsuits are before a federal mediator. Collins says she'll work in private practice.
