Despite slow start, Xavier pulls away from IUPUI

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) - The Xavier Musketeers overcame a sluggish first half to defeat IUPUI 66-43 Tuesday night.

The Musketeers were led by freshman forward Trevon Bluiett's 12 points and five rebounds. Junior guard Remy Abell scored 11 points for Xavier.

Xavier (7-2) had its slowest start of the season inside Cintas Center. In the first five minutes, the Musketeers had committed five turnovers en route to being down 10-3.

The Muskies used an 11-0 run, including three straight three-point baskets, midway through the first half to help catapult the Musketeers to a 27-23 lead at halftime.

In the second half, Xavier used another 17-4 run to help put the game out of reach.

IUPUI's defense and 18 Xavier turnovers led to the Musketeers lowest scoring output of the season. 12 of those turnovers came in the first half.

“What we did in the first half is not Xavier basketball,” junior forward James Farr said of their performance. “No excuses.”

IUPUI (2-6) came into the game on a three-game losing streak. Junior Remy Abell says the Musketeers may have overlooked the Jaguars.

“We took them (IUPUI) lightly,” Abell said. “We need to learn from it.”

Up next for the Musketeers is back to back road games against SEC opponents. First is Missouri (4-4) at 4 pm. on Saturday. Xavier then travels to Auburn on Dec. 20 to take on the Tigers.
