Oxford and Miami University leaders want Amtrak to make a scheduled stop in this Butler County city so students can have passenger rail service.

Amtrak's Cardinal train line runs from New York City to Washington D.C. to Cincinnati, and then to Chicago.

It passes right through Oxford without stopping.

The city hasn't had a passenger rail service in decades, but officials said it would be perfect for Miami students frequently traveling to and from Chicago.

There is a significant attraction from Oxford to Chicago because the top 10 out-of-state high schools that feed students to Miami are all from Illinois, according to the Miami Alumni Association. There are currently 11,000 Miami alumni in the Greater Chicago area.

The biggest challenge leaders are facing is the route time.

Right now, it could take 10 hours to get from Cincinnati to Chicago on the rail.

City and university leaders want to see a train stop three times a week with only a five-minute boarding and departing period.

A specific location for the rail stop hasn't been named.
