CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) -

Squirrels are chewing through more than just nuts this winter.

According to Mark Fisher, Vice President of Facilities at the Cincinnati Zoo, the squirrels biting through wires and destroying the holiday lights.

Fisher says that squirrels are being attracted to the new LED lights that they've installed for the Festival of Lights.

"For whatever reason, the squirrels love LED lights. It's been a huge problem actually. We probably spend 200 hours just repairing bad strands where the squirrels have eaten through," Fisher said.

So far, the estimated damage is $5,000.

The Zoo says they've tried spiking the strands with hot sauce.

Fisher says that this is the first time they've seen a problem with the squirrels and lights, and the old strands of lights they used did not attract the animals.

The Zoo used 2 million lights for their Festival of Lights that runs through Jan. 3.
