2014's major meteor shower this weekend

Dozens of meteors per hour could light up the sky this weekend in what's expected to be one of the best meteor showers of 2014.

The Geminid meteor shower will peak on the nights of Dec. 13 and 14. with maximum visibility just before dawn on Dec 14, according to NASA.

Cloud cover in the Tri-State is expected to be minimal this weekend, but you'll still want to head out of the city for the best view.

“To watch for meteors, you need no equipment other than your eyes. Find a dark spot with an open view of the sky and no glaring lights nearby,” writes editors at Sky and Telescope Magazine.

We receive an annual showing of the Geminid shower when Earth passes through pieces of debris from the comet Phaethon each December. (See a video of the 2012 Geminid Meteor shower here.)

Ornaments for your beard – the hot Christmas trend

Hang some Christmas ornaments on your face in the latest festive fashion known as ‘Beard Baubles.'

The baubles, originally only meant to be gifts for friends of the designers, hit the internet last week and demand soared. They sold out in a matter of days but the designers tweeted on Friday that they'll be selling off one final batch.

The ornaments attach to beards with tiny bobbi pins, which are included in the $11 pack of baubles. Proceeds from the Beard Baubles go to ‘Beard Season' – an Australian Melanoma charity.

"Christmas and beards have always gone hand in hand, right? Just look at Father Christmas. ... And seeing as it's been a great year for the beard, we thought it only fitting that we bejeweled them for the festive season," designers Mike Kennedy and Pauline Ashford told Mic.
