The Metropolitan Sewer District says this money is necessary to continue with infrastructure improvements mandated by a federal consent decree.

According to MSD Executive Director Tony Parrott, 13 percent of the 3,000 miles of sewer main is over 100-years-old.

The rate increase will go into effect on Jan. 1.
