Police identify 10-year-old who was shot, killed in Preble County

Police have identified the fifth-grade student who was shot and killed late Monday night.

According to Preble County Sheriff's Office, Brian Harleman, 43, shot 45-year-old Catherine Gessman and Gessman's daughter Samantha Carpenter before turning the gun on himself.

Harleman and Carpenter were pronounced dead at the scene. Gessman is currently recovering from her injuries at an Indianapolis hospital.

According to officials, the incident began when Harleman forcibly entered Gessman's house. Gessman and Carpenter fled to the back door. That is when Harleman fired multiple rounds from a handgun, striking both Gessman and Carpenter.

There is a history of domestic violence between Harleman and Gessman. On Dec. 17, Preble County police responded to a domestic violence complaint. Harleman was arrested for domestic violence, and a protection order was issued against him. He posted bond on Dec. 18 and was released from jail.

Gessman's injuries are not believed to be life threatening.
