Volunteers give up their Christmas Eve helping the less fortunate

For most of us the holidays mean gifts and quality time with family, but for some it is just another day trying to survive on the street.

On Christmas Eve nearly 300 people with no place to go will sleep at the Drop Inn Center in downtown Cincinnati. It is not an ideal way to spend the holiday which is why dozens are giving up their own Christmas Eve to make someone else's day a little brighter.

"Since they were about five years old I brought them down and they now bring their friends and now my friends come and bring their children so it's a nice viral affect,” said Jeff Holtmeier.

Holtmeier and his family have spent every Christmas Eve for nearly 30 years volunteering at the Drop Inn Center feeding and clothing the homeless like Gerald Page.

"It's just real wonderful for a guy like myself and others to be blessed and be helped out like this. It's a real treat,” said Page.

In fact, it is the busiest time of the year for donations. With everyone in the giving spirit Arlene Nolan says it allows the Drop Inn Center to provide gifts and food for anyone in need.

"As a shelter that's open 365 days a year and we serve over 200 people every day, it would be really nice to get these donations from spring through the fall but we are thankful for what we get through the season,” said Nolan.

A season that proves it is truly better to give than to receive.

"These people would have nowhere to go so one nice meal on a Christmas day and some small gifts is one small way to give back,” said Holtmeier.

The Drop Inn Center says they are most in need of financial donations. Several people came by with food but with so little refrigerator space, they are running out of places to store it.

You can donate by going to www.dropinn.org.

You can also donate $10 by texting the word DROP to 501501.
