NEWPORT, KY (FOX19) -

It's a tradition 21 years in the making...local firefighters helping to make the holiday a time to remember for those in need.

It's called the Beyond the Call program and on Christmas Eve four Newport families received gifts and other essentials in a way only a fire department can deliver them.

"We really appreciate it, to everyone that helped out and Santa Claus, just thank you," said one woman who's family received gifts.

Families in this program are selected with help from the Family Resource Center and the Newport Firefighters Union Local 45 then fills up the trucks with all the gifts, clothing, and other every-day necessities.

"We get a list from the families of what the kids want and need," said John Bloomfield, a retired Newport firefighter.

General Fernbach says it's really a community effort because some of their family members chip in and students at Newport Central High School help wrap the presents.

"You help these people every day and you don't really expect any kind of thanks but for them to give to us to give to others within the community just says so much about our community as a whole," said General Fernbach.

The Beyond the Call mission has raised more than 37 thousand dollars towards families in need through donations, fundraisers, and private donations.

"You always are sad, you feel bad for the kids but to see the smile on their faces it's well worth every bit of the effort we put in for it," said Fernbach.

"The looks on the families, the looks on the parents when we come in, it's just awesome to have that feeling," said Bloomfield.

Santa has a lot more stops before the night is complete, but it looks like this one was a success!
