The next week is busy at stores everywhere as people rush to get after Christmas deals and exchange unwanted gifts.

Before you go, be sure to check the store's policy. Find out what you need to get a refund or make an exchange, whether you'll need a receipt.

Policies can vary by location and if the gift was purchased on sale or clearance.

Check the return time frame, which can range from 30 days to a year.

Don't remove electronics from boxes. Most stores will not accept opened electronics.

Ask about any restocking fees as well as return shipping fees. Sometimes it's cheaper to return a gift in store than send it back to an online retailer.

Remember to pack plenty of patience.. The stores will likely be crowded with overworked employees.

Many of you probably received a gift card or two this holiday season.

Check whether there's an expiration date. Some businesses even deduct money from the card.. If it's not used within a year.

Put any gift cards you plan to spend in your wallet, not in a drawer or somewhere that you'll forget about them.

Spend them quickly. Even national chain stores can go out of business. Remember Circuit City and Blockbuster Video?

If you really don't want the card you were given, some websites will buy them from you!

But there's a catch: You'll get less than the value of the card.
