A Butler County judge has ordered the man accused of murdering an 87-year-old woman to be held without bond.

Daniel French, 56, pleaded not guilty Wednesday before Judge Michael Sage. French's charges include aggravated murder and abuse of a corpse in connection to the death of Barbara Howe in November of 2012.

A Grand Jury handed down the original indictment in December, but a superseding indictment was filed for additional death penalty specifications.

“The additional specification adds the element of killing for the purpose of detection to avoid arrest,” said Butler County Mike Gmoser.

French worked at the Monroe retirement facility where Howe resided and confessed to killing her after his arrest last month, according to a motion filed by the Butler County Prosecutor.

Howe was found dead inside the trunk of her car on Nov. 1, 2012 shortly after she had been reported missing.

French will appear in court again on Jan. 22.
